Three things Pete Kwiatkowski will bring as the defensive coordinator for Texas

Texas’ defensive coordinator hire was a name that not many saw coming.

Blitz packages

When you only have two down defensive linemen, generating a pass rush can be difficult. No true defensive ends that are supposed to be getting to the quarterback are going to be on the field to produce pressure. To combat that, Kwiatkowski has designed zone blitzes that come from all over the field.

Disguising the blitzes and sending four, maybe five players is a staple for the new Texas defensive coordinator. At any point, any defender in a Kwiatkowski defense could come in hot on a blitz. Middle linebacker, outside linebacker, safety, and even the nickelback. Confusing quarterbacks is the name of the game.

This is something linebacker DeMarvion Overshown should be able to excel at. He finished the 2020 season with 8.0 tackles for loss (second on the team) and 1.0 sacks. With Overshown potentially moving to inside linebacker and the outside linebackers being a question mark heading into the season, Kwiatkowski will need to find a way to get him in the backfield.
