Three takeaways from Oklahoma’s 79-73 win against Iowa State in Kansas City

Three takeaways from Oklahoma’s 79-73 win over Iowa State in Kansas City in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament on Wednesday night.

Extremely needed win

To say this win was needed would be a pretty large understatement. Coming into the week on a four-game losing streak and playing a team with two wins all year and no conference victories made this as much of a must-have as any non-NCAA Tournament game can really be.

While it will surely feel very good for the team to get back in the win column, it would be wise to be cautious as a fan of the Sooners to assume they have their groove back. While Iowa State isn’t nearly as bad as their record would indicate, this is a win that should really be a given for a team hoping to do next to anything in the NCAA Tournament.

But, that being said, it is very good to see Oklahoma get on the floor and do the things necessary to win a basketball game again. It wasn’t totally out of the realm of possibility that they could have come into this game and played flatly and gotten beat by a team with nothing to lose. They deserve credit for avoiding that nightmare scenario.

Now the question will be can they build on it and turn it into a good performance tomorrow against a shorthanded Kansas team. Another win this week could create some legitimate momentum before heading to Indianapolis.
