Three reasons to retain Chris Ash as defensive coordinator for Texas

Retaining staff would be a similar move to Tom Herman. However, here are three reasons Sark should consider bringing Ash back as the DC:

To keep defensive recruiting momentum

Texas’ 2021 recruiting class was not a win by any means. However, if there is a positive, it’s how solid and deep the defensive prospects are from the top to the bottom. If you count five-star Ja’Tavion Sanders, the Longhorns’ top seven recruits all come from Ash’s side of the ball.

J.D. Coffey and Ishmael Ibraheem out of the secondary are two guys who have questions around their enrollment status but are both seen as Ash guys. Terrance Cooks, Byron Murphy and Derrick Harris Jr. are all early enrollees who have the chance to make an early impact. Blue-chip recruits, especially in the front seven, have been drawn to the Longhorns since Ash took over.

Most of the success in the recruiting world will also be based on what kind of staff Ash is surrounded by. Horns247 has already reported that Bo Davis will take over as the defensive line coach. Top tier recruiters such as Jay Valai (defensive backs) and Coleman Hutzler (linebackers) have a great chance of staying on board. Defensive recruiting will have the chance to pick up where it left off if Ash is retained.
