There has been much debate as to who the next defensive coordinator for Texas will be.
Will Steve Sarkisian retain Chris Ash? Will he look for an outside hire? Names such as Will Muschamp and Barry Odom have popped up but neither will reportedly be taking the job.
Having Ash remain in Austin as the defensive coordinator could come with multiple benefits though. In Tom Herman’s previous regime with Todd Orlando, Texas ran a 3-3-5 defense that was getting burned on a weekly basis. Ash came in and fixed it up with a 4-3 base. Chris Adimora played SPUR, a linebacker/defensive back hybrid, while Joseph Ossai played Jack, a linebacker/defensive end hybrid, depending on the call.
Retaining staff would be a move similar to what we saw during Herman’s tenure. Keeping it too comfortable and within his circle instead of making the correct outside hire. However, here are three reasons Sarkisian should consider bringing Ash back as the defensive coordinator.
