New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton seems to be a lot like the man he’s replacing, Tom Brady. For The Win’s Steven Ruiz dug up a video clip from “In Depth with Graham Bensinger,” and it showed Newton discussing what he’s thinking before he takes the snap.
Newton discussed making his pre-snap read while sending hand signals to his former receiver, Kelvin Benjamin, with the Carolina Panthers. The breakdown is as thorough as it is entertaining, with Newton drawing constantly laughter out of the crowd.
It’s not only a demonstration of Newton’s command over NFL defenses but also his ability to relate to everyone. The quarterback will have no problem winning over the team’s locker room.

Newton’s description is uncannily similar to what some of Brady’s teammates said of the quarterback during the pre-snap. Brady’s hand signals are so subtle that tight end Martellus Bennett had to learn to be particularly observant. And then when he left the Patriots, he had unlearn those careful observation skills so that he didn’t misunderstand his next quarterback.
“He’s like Prince out there,” Bennett said of Brady. “You don’t really see the checks. When I first got there, he was like, ‘Yo,’” Bennet made a number of different gestures to emulate Brady. “And I was like, ‘Was that you talking to me?’
“So now when I go to (Green Bay Packers quarterback) Aaron (Rodgers), Aaron did something the other day, and I was like, ‘Man I thought that was a check.’ Because he just moved his finger, and that’s how Tom was. I ran the wrong route (for Rodgers). Because I was like, ‘I thought you were telling me to run something else.’ He was like, ‘No, I was just looking at you.’ But Tom would look at you smooth, just like,” Bennett made more subtle gestures.
Though the Patriots lost arguably the greatest quarterback of all time in free agency, they seem to have found a gem in Newton, who is a former NFL MVP winner. The only question is whether he will stay healthy enough to show his abilities for the better part of an NFL season.
