Another year at Missouri Western State University is in the books as the Kansas City Chiefs have officially wrapped their 2022 training camp.
The team has spent four weeks in St. Joseph, Missouri, training hard ahead of the 2022 NFL season. The players and coaching staff have laid the foundation for a season that they hope will be an extension of the last four years of success in Kansas City.
No one knows more about what that type of success looks like than Patrick Mahomes, be it on a team level or an individual level. Speaking to reporters after practice on Thursday, Mahomes was asked about the players who stood out most during the course of training camp. His first answer shouldn’t come as any surprise to those who attended practices.
“Chris Jones. I mean he was dominant,” Mahomes said. “He’s the first one that I think of, and I think it’ll be the same with Chris this year, from what I saw it was the run and the pass. I mean he was down there dominating stuff, making tackles on run game just as much as he was getting to the quarterback and getting around me, affecting how I threw the ball.”
Jones always finds a way to up the ante each year at training camp and improve his game. That was the case at training camp this year as he battled against guys like Trey Smith and Joe Thuney in practice.
As for the offensive side of the ball, Mahomes complimented his new receivers, but he didn’t name anyone specifically. The players he did name play the tight end position and could be a big part of the team’s plans for the 2022 NFL season.
“I thought some of the receivers had great camps,” Mahomes said. “I thought Noah Gray had a great camp, making stuff happen. I thought Jody (Fortson), up until the injury, but he was having a great camp and I thought (he) kind of bounced back as he got back involved so I think a lot of guys had great camps out here.
“You expect guys like Chris, Travis (Kelce), all (of) them to have great camps, but seeing the other guys have great camps is always a good thing.”
