There are good reasons why the Warriors are bringing Steph Curry back now

This actually makes sense.

On paper, the Golden State Warriors should shut down Steph Curry and ride out tanking the rest of the year.

But the Dubs are in an intriguing position heading into this summer, and it actually produces a good reason why bringing back Curry now makes all the sense in the world.

The Warriors will have Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins in the lineup next season. They unearthed some depth in Eric Paschall and Damion Lee. It’s also possible they’ll have a high lottery pick to throw into the mix … or they’ll trade it for a big name.

It’s a good idea to throw Curry out there with Wiggins to see how they fit together, and perhaps this is a spot for the guard to give the much-criticized swingman help so he’ll gain some confidence and figure out how to do things the way Steve Kerr likes.

That’s monumentally huge going into a year when the Dubs could get right back to competing at the top of the West. Wiggins has played really well for the depleted Warriors, but now it’s about getting in reps for when they REALLY count.

Plus, it’s not like there’s a Zion Williamson waiting at the top of the lottery. There are intriguing players — LaMelo Ball, Georgia’s Anthony Edwards, Dayton forward Obi Toppin, James Wiseman could be a good fit in the Warriors’ rotation — but no one who is a bona fide No. 1.

The Warriors might be just fine picking second or third and getting whoever drops to them. So tanking hard for a better shot at the top pick — remember, the new NBA lottery odds give a bunch of the bottom teams relatively good shots to win the No. 1 — isn’t always going to work.

What is important is getting this team ready right out of the gate in 2020-21. Getting Curry back now will go a long way toward that.
