Texas A&M (8-3, 5-2) left Alabama feeling as low as possible after losing to Auburn in quadruple overtime in one of the more heartbreaking losses in the last ten seasons.
After holding a 31-28 lead late in regulation after returning from a 21-0 deficit, A&M’s defense allowed Auburn QB Payton Thorne to march down the field, leading to the game-tying field goal. Trading touchdowns and two field goals, the Tigers stopped the Aggies on the two-point try in the fourth OT session, ending the game.
While many of us, outside of those paying close attention to Alabama’s struggles against Oklahoma, didn’t believe the Aggies had a chance to make the SEC Title game with a loss to the Tigers, Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger confirmed Alabama’s loss to the Sooners pushes Georgia into the Championship game, while the winner of the regular season finale between Texas A&M and Texas with determine the Title matchup.
Texas took care of business against Kentucky at home, defeating the Wildcats 31-14. The Aggies’ first-half struggles are worrying, but they could be a one-game sample due to playing on the road in a tough environment.
However, being able to return to Kyle Field in front of a sold-out crown doesn’t help this A&M team start fast and finish the job, the Aggies are headed for another 8-4 finish and meaningless bowl game while the Longhorns compete for an SEC Championship and a second consecutive CFP berth.
The SEC confirms that Georgia has clinched a spot into the championship game. Bulldogs will play the winner of Texas and Texas A&M.
