The Rock on WrestleMania match with Roman Reigns: ‘There’s a chance’

The Rock vs. Roman Reigns could happen at a WrestleMania, but which one?

Tuesday was already a busy day when it came to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and WWE, as he became a member of TKO’s board of directors and acquired ownership of the name “The Rock.” But he didn’t stop there, as Johnson also teased a possible WrestleMania match with Roman Reigns.

Yes, we know speculation about this matchup is not new. And it certainly only picked up once The Rock appeared on the Jan. 1 episode of Raw and made a “Head of the Table” reference.

What Johnson hadn’t really done until today, however, was to answer a direct question about facing Reigns and say it might happen — which is exactly what he just did as a guest on ESPN’s “First Take,”

Asked directly by host Molly Querim, The Rock said “There’s a chance, Molly, there’s a chance.”

But could he have been talking about WrestleMania next year and not WrestleMania 40 in Philadelphia? Check out Johnson’s comments prior to Querim’s question and judge for yourself:

Look, you guys know, I feel like you know, I’m a long gamer. And I like to build. Something like this … If myself and Roman Reigns were to main event WrestleMania — and I mean this very respectfully of all the WrestleManias prior, because I grew up in this business and I love it — we could possibly put on, with us as a main event and this incredible group of men and women, who are incredible performers, we could possibly put on the greatest and the biggest WrestleMania of all time.

That sounds like it would leave some wiggle room for Rock vs. Reigns to take place down the road a little bit more, which would in turn be good news for Cody Rhodes and others hoping to take on Reigns this year in Philadelphia.

It wouldn’t be out of the question for WWE to set up a huge match a full year in advance. Or perhaps things come together over the next few months. Either way, The Rock vs. Roman Reigns is one of the biggest pro wrestling matches that could possibly be made. He knows it, all of us know it, and that means we’re all going to keep hanging on any hints in that direction until it happens or is put to rest for good.
