The Rock keeps teasing Roman Reigns WrestleMania match: ‘We’re figuring it out’

No one understands how to keep hope alive for a WWE match without giving specifics like The Rock.

Ever since his Jan. 1 appearance on WWE Raw and his comment about whether he might want to “sit at the head of the table,” there’s been a “wait, is this happening for real?” feeling about the prospect of a WrestleMania showdown between Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Roman Reigns.

The Rock certainly seems more committed to it than ever, which is notable since his very busy schedule as an entertainer and businessman means WWE can’t ever assume he’ll be available. The bigger question was whether he means this year, as in roughly two months away at WrestleMania 40 in Philadelphia, or maybe next year instead.

Will Cain of Fox News caught up with Johnson last week when he appeared at the New York Stock Exchange to celebrate joining the TKO board of directors. And once again, he did a superb job of keeping the flames of fans’ hopes burning while leaving the question of exactly when the match might take place up to some debate (h/t Fightful for the transcription).

We’re talking about that right now. I like to consider myself a long-gamer and a builder. The idea of going up against Roman Reigns and creating, if we were to do something like that, quite possibly and I mean this respectfully of all the WrestleManias before…with all the success and build up of all the WrestleManias in the past, if we were to do something like that, we could possibly put on the biggest WrestleMania of all-time. Short answer and long answer is we’re figuring it out.

This is in line with some of Johnson’s previous statements where he has mentioned the long game, leading one to think he might be managing expectations for this year’s WrestleMania.

On the other hand, WWE has been dealing with some reshuffling to this year’s expected WrestleMania card after news broke that CM Punk is injured. This week’s Raw featured Seth Rollins challenging Royal Rumble winner Cody Rhodes to pick him instead of his expected target of Reigns, leaving the door open just a crack for a Rock vs. Roman match to take place in Philly.
