To be sure, Caleb Williams is not the front-runner for the 2022 Heisman Trophy. He is not in the top two. He is, at best, No. 3, very possibly fifth or sixth as October ends. Yet, he is one of a small group of players in the hunt for the award. It’s not likely that he will win, but there is a non-zero chance he can win. Not many others can say that.
We can all debate what should happen in the Heisman race. We all have our opinions on who we think ought to win the award. Let’s set that aside, however, and discuss the contours of the race as it exists and what needs to happen for Caleb Williams relative to the other top candidates. Consider this a roadmap for Caleb if he is going to be the Heisman winner or at least have a good shot at the award heading into the final game of the season:
