The Philadelphia Union are turning 6-0 wins into a normal thing

Best of luck to Atlanta United on their visit to Subaru Park next week

The Philadelphia Union won 6-0…again.

One week after they eviscerated D.C. United by that scoreline at Audi Field, they hosted the Colorado Rapids and did the exact same thing.

It’s the second time in MLS history that a team has scored six goals in consecutive games, with Real Salt Lake doing the same back in 2018 (a pair of games that, comically for everyone other than the Rapids, included a 6-0 win over Colorado), and first time anyone has ever done it without conceding.

Last week in D.C., Julián Carranza produced a hat trick, and while he scored against Colorado, this time the game ball went to Dániel Gazdag after the Hungary international struck twice early and then made it three in the late going.

While United managed to actually have a decent early spell before crumbling, the Union made light work out of Colorado from the jump. Gazdag had the space to casually jog onto Mikael Uhre’s chest trap into space to score a ninth minute opener.

Gazdag then fired home a penalty in the 20th minute after being brought down. 10 minutes later, Philadelphia were on the spot again, but this time it was Carranza finishing after Gustavo Vallecilla fouled Olivier Mbaizo.

The nightmare got worse for the Rapids, as Vallecilla picked up his second yellow in the 35th minute. The Rapids managed to hang on at merely a 3-0 road loss, but between heavy legs and Philadelphia’s relentlessness, there was more punishment to come.

Gazdag got his hat trick in transition in the 83rd minute, and there was still time for Cory Burke and Matt Real to get on the scoresheet as well as the wheels well and truly fell off for Colorado.

“Thank you to the fans for making this really, really difficult place for teams to come and play,” said Jim Curtin to open his post-game remarks to reporters. “I think the energy in the building now is at an all-time high. I think (fans) might expect us to score five and six goals every time we step on the field, which I guess is a good thing.”

Curtin also gave credit to the players themselves, saying “I’m just the coach. But players are the ones that win games. Players are the ones that execute on the field. We have a deep squad, Ernst (Tanner) has given me a lot of great resources and great players.”

Atlanta United, who will on short rest head up to Subaru Park for a game this coming Wednesday, might need to prepare for a long night at the office.
