The New England Patriots are the latest team to make changes to their uniforms, and it appears they mostly took their “Color Rush” threads and either promoted them to full-time use or made changes based on them.
And that’s … fine. I declare these uniforms are neither amazing nor terrible.
The shoulder stripes are a little weird, but the white and navy combo is pretty good, and I like the numbers. Overall, I get the instinct to start all over again with Tom Brady off to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but there wasn’t anything particularly wrong with the old jerseys.
A lot of people were hoping for the old “Pat Patriot” throwbacks, and the Patriots addressed that in their release.
Let’s start with the uniforms:
The look we love, promoted to primary.

Neat, navy, New England.

Again: Not bad. But I’d say the Cleveland Browns’ new unis are better. And as for those throwback Pat Patriot looks? There are a bunch of people hoping for them:
Missed opportunity to reintroduce the pat patriot helmet. Just update the blue to match the unis and throw in some white pants, and perfection pic.twitter.com/WgyeUXmf6E

I actually like it. Would like it even more if they went back to Pat Patriot on the helmet though https://t.co/xG1nLuvZG5

I appreciate the effort, but, why you making this so hard. Just go with Pat Patriot era colors/design and slap the current logo on the hat. Also, these are looking too much like the *current* Bills uniforms… https://t.co/zbd9AwWXGG

As I mentioned, the Patriots did address that, however. From their release:
NFL rules state that teams can only use one helmet for the season, and silver helmets have come to represent the modern era of the New England Patriots. A silver helmet with the “Flying Elvis” logo just doesn’t work with the red uniforms, which, of course, feature a white helmet with the iconic “Pat Patriot” logo.
(Kraft Sports and Entertainment CMO Jen) Ferron did leave the door open that, if the NFL ever changed the rule to allow more than one helmet per season, the red uniforms could certainly make a comeback as the team’s alternate.
“Our primary uniforms in the modern era have been blue and white and they will remain so,” Ferron said. “We recognize that fans also have an affinity for the red ‘throwback’ uniform and we hope to incorporate that into our uniform rotation in the future.”
So here’s hoping the NFL does lift the “one helmet” rule and we all get to see the old school Pat Patriot come back.
