The New England Patriots are slipping dangerously into playoff irrelevance. Bill Belichick’s squad is 2-4, and would need to rip off an unexpected series of wins in order to make the playoffs.
FiveThirtyEight.com, a statistical analysis website, projects the Patriots will finish the season at 7-10. The website gives New England just a 21% chance of making the playoffs, an ugly set of prospects for a team. Their chances of winning the division have slipped to just 3%.
It’s clear the Patriots are making progress — just not quick enough. Rookie Mac Jones appears to be growing every week. The Patriots defense has put together impressive performances against top offenses like the Dallas Cowboys and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Still, the record is what matters. The Patriots are in a hole, with a tough set of games on the way.
Per @FiveThirtyEight, the Patriots…
* Are projected to finish 7-10
* Have a 21% chance of making the playoffs
* Have a 3% chance of winning the division
* Have a 0.2% chance of getting a first-round bye
* Have a 0.3% chance of making the Super Bowl— Henry McKenna (@McKennAnalysis) October 18, 2021
