The Michigan football team has played USC exactly one time in the Los Angeles Coliseum.
Michigan and USC playing in the greater Los Angeles metro area? That has happened eight times in various Rose Bowl showdowns over the years. From the first Rose Bowl meeting between the two schools in 1948 to the last one in 2007, the Trojans and Wolverines have carved out a significant place in college football’s oldest and most famous bowl game.
The USC-Michigan matchup is the most-played Rose Bowl matchup in history. It’s the king of the Granddaddy, if you want to put it that way. USC-Michigan slightly eclipses the seven all-time Rose Bowl meetings between USC and Ohio State.
USC’s move to the Big Ten next year means that the Trojans won’t play Michigan in Rose Bowls anymore — at least not unless something crazy happens. It also means USC will play Michigan a lot more often, including at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Sure enough, the team will play in the venerable stadium in 2024.
It will be just the second time Michigan has played USC in the Coliseum.
When was the only previous time the Wolverines set foot inside the Coli?
You would have to go back to 1957. USC and Michigan played a home-and-home series in 1957 and 1958. Don Clark coached the Trojans, while Bennie Oosterbaan — coach of the 1948 national champion Michigan team — led the Maize and Blue.
Michigan won, 16-6.
Lincoln Riley and Jim Harbaugh are likely to witness a game with a lot more points in 2024.
