The next AJ Brown? Perry Thompson could play same role at Auburn

Auburn’s latest commitment is drawing similarities to another great receiver to play for Hugh Freeze.

When college football fans think of Hugh Freeze, his ability to develop quarterbacks and receivers usually jumps out.

Freeze has had five seasons of 3,000-yard passing performances from his quarterbacks, and his receivers are a part of the reason why.

Freeze had the pleasure of coaching several talented receivers such as Donte Moncrief, Laquon Treadwell, Evan Engram, and DK Metcalf during his time at Ole Miss, and Auburn’s latest commitment is drawing comparisons to the most talented receiver Freeze has ever coached, AJ Brown.

Following his commitment on Saturday, five-star [autotag]Perry Thompson[/autotag] told Hayes Fawcett of On3 that the coaching staff at Auburn sees him taking on a similar role that Brown played at Ole Miss.

“Love the coaching staff and the energy everyone brings. I’m really close to Freeze and coach (Marcus) Davis,” Thompson tells On3. “We’ve built a pretty strong relationship. They see me as an AJ Brown type in their offense. A lot of one on one matchups and just getting the ball in my hands to make plays.”

Brown hauled in 29 passes for 412 yards in his lone season playing for Freeze in 2016. He ended his college career with 2,984 yards on 189 catches with 19 touchdowns. Brown currently plays for the Philadelphia Eagles and has 4,491 receiving yards with 35 touchdowns in four professional seasons.

If Thompson can build a similar reputation as Brown, Auburn fans will be happy over the next several seasons.
