“We encourage each school to use its discretion to make the best decisions possible for football and basketball student-athletes within the appropriate resocialization framework,” said M. Grace Calhoun, the chair of the NCAA Division 1 Council in a statement released yesterday. “Allowing for voluntary athletics activity acknowledges that reopening our campuses will be an individual decision but should be based on advice from medical experts.”
Essentially, the NCAA sees this as putting the control into the hands of players and coaches. It will be interesting to see how different schools approach these voluntary activities in the month of June.
