Kansas City Chiefs fans have waited a long time to watch their team play in a Super Bowl, but on Sunday night in Miami, Patrick Mahomes will have a chance to win a second world championship for the franchise in Super Bowl LIV.
The Chiefs’ last Super Bowl appearance occurred 50 years ago in Super Bowl IV as a representative of the AFL. Led by Super Bowl MVP Len Dawson, the Chiefs defeated the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings 23-7, despite entering the game as a 13-point underdog. Between Super Bowl IV and the 2018 NFL season, the Chiefs had made the playoffs in 17 seasons, but only advanced to the conference championship twice, and lost on both occasions.
The Chiefs made one other Super Bowl appearance two years earlier, but fell to Bart Starr and the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl II, which was played in Miami.
There is a remarkably high-quality video of Super Bowl IV on YouTube, if you have a spare three hours leading up to game day.
