The five best heavyweights on the planet – in order

The heavyweight division is still coming into focus. Here are my five best in the division, in order.

  1. TYSON FURY (29-0-1, 20 KOs)

I think The Gypsy King is the best boxer among the current crop of heavyweights, which is remarkable given his 6-foot-9 frame. The man can move like a much smaller person. He proved as much in his first fight against Wilder, last December, even though he didn’t have much time to shed rust from his 2½-year layoff. Yes, Wilder pounded him to the canvas in the 12th round. The fact is he got up and reached the final bell. And although the judges scored the fight a draw, most observers – including me – believe Fury ended up on the wrong end of a bad decision. Wilder’s title should be his. What about the Otto Wallin fight in September? Legitimate question. Fury didn’t look great against an obscure opponent, one who obviously was better than we realized, but he fought most of the bout through a gruesome cut and won by a wide decision. We’ll see what happens if he gets tagged again by Wilder in their rematch.
