The Miami Dolphins will finish this season either 4-12 or 5-11 and are guaranteed to own last place in the AFC East for 2019. That’s the bad news. The good news? Miami arguably wasn’t supposed to win any games at all — and a big part of the reason why is centered around Miami’s long-term vision as a program. They’re looking to turn this thing around and had to hit the reset button.
And when overviewing Miami’s efforts in hitting reset, there are some pretty impressive numbers to consider — all of which have been highlighted by The Ringer’s Kevin Clark during his excellent spotlight on the Dolphins’ rebuilding plan and efforts to transition the Dolphins from mediocrity to contenders.
Clark references several key data points that illustrate just how hard at work the Miami Dolphins’ personnel has been this season.
- 80 players played, which is an NFL record for the most in a single season. (Reminder: teams carry a 53-man roster)
- $65M in dead cap against the 2019 salary cap, a figure Clark references as one of the highest ever.
- 20 waiver wire claims in 2019 (Clark cites the league average is around 4)
- 228 total transactions relative to the NFL average of 142
These are some pretty incredible numbers and they illustrate Miami’s efforts to unearth unheralded gems that can fit Miami’s locker room and system. Any and every effort is being made to unearth gems and find hidden treasures. With so many holes in the roster, the Dolphins are a team that will be well served to find a few starters and role players in unexpected places — and that’s exactly the plan they’re putting into motion.
Make sure to read Clark’s entire spotlight on the Dolphins this morning, too. It’s well worth the time of any Miami Dolphins fan.
