The disgusting fan in Philadelphia who poured popcorn on Russell Westbrook should be banned for life

Ban this disgusting fan for life.

This is the online version of our morning newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning.

By now you’ve likely seen the ugly moment during last night’s Wizards-Sixers game when a cowardly fan dumped popcorn on Russell Westbrook as he made his way back to locker room with an ankle injury.

It was a disgusting act by a pathetic person who should be ashamed of themselves, to say the absolute very least. The garbage fan was quickly ejected from the arena but that should be the start of the punishments for this person, and those punishments should be severe.

The NBA needs to do the right thing and quickly ban this person from ever attending any NBA game ever again. I know that can be a tough thing to police but it’s something that should be locked in by now. No more NBA games for this person. None. Zero. Goodbye.

LeBron James weighed in on it last night and had some good points. He tweeted: “By the way WE AS THE PLAYERS wanna see who threw that popcorn on Russ while he was leaving the game tonight with a injury!! There’s cameras all over arenas so there’s no excuse! Cause if the (shoe) was on the other (foot)… #ProtectOurPlayers.”

LeBron is right – the players should be able to see who threw the popcorn. And so should everyone else. That’s another punishment that should come from this – if you’re going to pull such an awful move as this then you deserve to have your face plastered all over the news, in the paper, on Twitter – everywhere.

If you’re going to do something as sad and gross as this then you deserve to be publicly shamed. It’s as simple as that. Let the photos of you go viral and let everyone know who you are and what you did.

It’s like the videos that go viral of people acting in horrible ways in airports, in city parks, and, sadly, in numerous other spots. People need to be held accountable for their actions and there’s no better way right now than to let everyone know who did this and let the public judge them for their garbage actions.

Westbrook said after the game: “To be completely honest, this s— is getting out of hand, especially for me. The amount of disrespect, the amount of fans just doing whatever the f— they want to do — it’s just out of pocket. There are certain things that cross the line. Any other setting … a guy were to come up on the street and pour popcorn on my head, you know what happens. In these arenas, you got to start protecting the players. We’ll see what the NBA does.”

And he’s 150 percent correct. People need to stop it with all this disrespectful behavior, no matter if they’re at a game, out in public, on Twitter, or anywhere else. We need to be better as a whole and just be kinder to each other in general.

We also need to see the NBA ban this fan for life and we need to know who this fan is because maybe if you make an example of this person it could stop other awful people from doing something like this in the future.

We can hope it would, at least.
