The Arizona Cardinals have officially revoked the incredibly controversial “independent study” clause that was baked into quarterback Kyler Murray’s massive extension.
On Thursday, insider Ian Rapoport first reported the news after days of jokes were levied the Cardinals and Murray’s way following his gargantuan $230.5 million contract extension. The “independent study” clause was leaked on Monday, detailing that Murray was required to spend at least four hours per game week preparing without distractions such as TV, video games, or internet browsing.
It’s no secret Murray’s been on rocky ground with the Cardinals recently, with reports coming out of Arizona in February concerning the quarterback’s work ethic and personality that he clapped back on. The “independent study” drama added even more fuel to the fire, with Murray holding a surprise press conference on Thursday calling the clause “disrespectful”.
The Cardinals released a statement on Murray’s updated contract.

It reads:
After seeing the distraction it created, we removed the addendum from the contract. It was clearly perceived in ways that were never intended. Our confidence in Kyler Murray is as high as it’s ever been and nothing demonstrates our belief in his ability to lead this team more than the commitment reflected in this contract.
It’s clear Murray and the Cardinals have a lot of work to do to patch up their relationship after this embarrassing fallout.
