The Bryson DeChambeau-Brooks Koepka ‘Match’ is going to be super lame

This is going to be like the Michelob Ultra of golf events – watered down and a waste of time.

This is the online version of our morning newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning.

I’m a huge golf fan. I love to play the beautiful game whenever I can and I watch way more professional golf each week than any normal/sane person should.

So when it was announced yesterday that Brooks Koepka will be facing Bryson DeChambeau in the fifth edition of The Match the day after Thanksgiving one would think I’d be in love with this idea, especially considering the long-running feud between these two guys and all the drama that has surrounded them for quite some time.

Instead, I find the whole thing super cringy and don’t think the 12-hole event is going to be a good watch on TV. It’s going to be like the Michelob Ultra of golf events – watered down and a waste of time.

The good thing about this event is that it will likely raise a lot of money for charity and I’m always for things that do just that. It’s great and helpful and nice and generous.

But when it comes down to the golf and these two guys being mic’d up and talking trash and trying to make this thing entertaining, that is where they lose me.

Actually, they already lost me with their lame tweets yesterday after the announcement was made.

Koepka tweeted: “So does this mean we’re having ‘Friendsgiving?'”

Ugh.

And DeChambeau tweeted: “Finally what the world has been waiting to see.”

Double ugh.

Nothing like some bland sponsored tweets to get you fired up for this thing!

There are a number of reasons why this doesn’t excite me at all.

First, these guys are not the most entertaining talkers of all time. I can’t see them being that fun to listen to during this event. These things are hard to keep entertaining for the hours that they last. With these two guys it’s all going to sound so forced and contrived and not in a good way like when someone such as Phil Mickelson is doing it.

Second, this isn’t what the world has been waiting to see. It’s a meaningless 12-hole event on a resort course in Las Vegas in late November. What the golf world wants to see is these guys in a final group of a big tournament going head to head when it matters. That’s the fun stuff. That’s the meaningful stuff.

Third, these guys just hugged it out a few times after being teammates on USA’s winning Ryder Cup team at Whistling Straits. That did a lot to squash this once “heated rivalry” and took out any juice that would have been left for this event.

I have to think by now most golf fans are over this Brooks-Bryson thing and this event is something that might have been interesting a few months ago but now just seems like a lame thing that will be forgotten about minutes after it ends, or before it even begins.

Quick hits: Kyrie Irving could lose a lot of money… Nastiest pitches of the MLB season… NFL fans crush Jags’ owner… And more.

– Kyrie Irving is going to lose A LOT of money if he doesn’t get the COVID-19 vaccine. How much? This much. Wow.

– Take a look back at the nastiest pitches of the 2021 MLB regular season. What a hard year to be a professional hitter!

– Jaguars owner Shad Kahn said he’s sticking with Urban Meyer and NFL fans crushed him for it.

– Speaking of Urban Meyer, here’s an ugly timeline of his terrible tenure with the Jags so far.

– A few of announcers thought Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton hit a home run in this first inning of last night’s Yankees-Red Sox game but he didn’t and it was all pretty awkward.
