Mitchell Trubisky was one of the worst starting quarterbacks in the NFL last season, which led the Bears to spend valuable draft capital to bring in former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles as a potential No. 1 QB option.
In March, the Bears sent a compensatory fourth-round pick to the Jaguars for Foles, and will owe Foles $24 million over the next three seasons. It was a deal that looked bad at the time – and looks even worse now that Foles won’t be the starter. Alternatively, the Bears could have just signed Cam Newton for less money while giving up zero picks – and if Newton is successful with the Patriots, that choice could be difficult to live down for GM Ryan Pace.
In a competitive battle, Bears are expected to name Mitchell Trubisky the starting QB, source tells ESPN.
It’s due to his progression, leadership and overall performance throughout camp. Nick Foles made decision difficult for Matt Nagy, but the team feels strong about its QBs.

Football analysts were roasting the Bears front office after the news dropped.
Imagine passing on Cam Newton and Jameis Winston for $1M so you could give up a fourth-round pick for Nick Foles AND guarantee him $21M only to keep starting Mitchell Trubisky. GM of the Year, Ryan Pace. #Bears https://t.co/NamD08Jtua

The Bears declined Mitchell Trubisky's option, traded a fourth-round pick for Nick Foles and restructured his deal to give him guaranteed money through 2022 …
And are starting Trubisky.

*Due to his draft slot and the Bears front office needing him to play https://t.co/Hrl528pcSk

The fact that the Bears are going with Trubisky. If I had to read between the tea leaves. From my life around the nfl. He must have significantly outperformed Foles in training camp. And if so. Good for him. Trubisky has talent. Can he put it all together??

1. #Bears decline Trubisky’s fifth-year option.
2. Are tied down to Foles with $21M guaranteed.
3. Name Trubisky the starter. https://t.co/cECNm0iths
