The San Francisco 49ers were without quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo or running back Raheem Mostert, who left the game with injuries. San Francisco also didn’t have tight end George Kittle, who was ruled out before the game.
So when the 49ers were facing a third-and-31, they decided to run a simple toss play, essentially tucking their tail between their legs to make sure that had room to punt the ball. But because they were playing the New York Jets, a franchise in a truly sad place, the 49ers converted the third down.
It was a wild show of incompetence with running back Jerick McKinnon busting off a 55-yard run. Check out the play.
Just your routine 3rd and 31 conversion with a toss play to Jet McKinnon. No biggie. #49ers #Jets @AroundTheNFL pic.twitter.com/GT5vbKZIyF

Because the Jets found new levels of embarrassment, NFL media members and fans rightfully ripped them on Twitter.

Jerrick McKinnon just converted a third-and-31 with a simple toss with San Francisco's starting quarterback out.
How's that Gregg Williams thing working out?
