Texas will not host a super regional over the weekend. The Longhorns are officially slated to face Stanford in Palo Alto after the Cardinal defeated the Texas A&M Aggies on Monday evening.
Undoubtedly, the series will be a difficult matchup for Texas. Stanford stifled the high-scoring Texas A&M offense in the deciding game of the region. On the offensive end, Stanford shortstop Tommy Troy leads the attack with what was a .413 batting average heading into the final game with A&M.
In the other dugout, the Longhorns are playing excellent baseball. While Stanford was forced to exhaust its players in a five-game marathon, Texas was able to somewhat preserve its arms in only playing three games over the past weekend.
The ‘Horns have to feel good about their starting rotation heading into the series. Lucas Gordon and Labarron Johnson Jr. pitched excellent games in their first NCAA Tournament outings this year. If it comes down to a third game, Tanner Witt has the tools to command a game.
Texas has made 38 College World Series appearances, an NCAA record. The team will look to extend that record with a series win at Stanford.
