Texas State hands Oregon softball early defeat in regional action

Oregon’s 27-game win streak in regional play goes by the wayside as Texas State pulls off the 5-1 upset.

That meeting with Mike White and the Texas Longhorns will have to wait for a bit.

Texas State put a wrench in everyone’s plans to watch the Ducks face their former coach and some players as the Bobcats upset Oregon 5-1 in the Austin Regional.

It’ll be the Bobcats who will play the Longhorns Saturday, while the Ducks will play Saint Francis (PA) in an elimination game at 1:30 p.m. PST. Saint Francis finds themselves with a date with Oregon with the 12-0 loss to Texas earlier in the day.

The Ducks’ loss broke a 27-game winning streak Oregon had in Regional play. Their last defeat in this round of the NCAA tournament came way back in 2009.

But it wasn’t like Oregon didn’t have it chances to dent the scoreboard. The Ducks had chance after chance and were never able to capitalize. They ended the game going 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Oregon also left 11 runners on base.

For three straight innings, the Ducks had runners on second and third with two out and unfortunately, they just could never come up with that big hit to get back in the game.

Texas State scored three early runs off of ace pitcher Brooke Yanez, including a two-run homer from Hailey MacKay in the second inning. It was 3-0 when the Ducks finally scored what turned out to be their only run, a homer from Allee Bunker down the left-field line.

With the loss, the road to advance is going to be a difficult one for the Ducks. If they defeat Saint Francis, they’ll then have to face the loser of the Texas-Texas State game. In short, in order to advance to the Super Regional, Oregon is going to have to win four games in two days.
