Texas Rangers at Seattle Mariners odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Texas Rangers at Seattle Mariners odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The Seattle Mariners (6-5) host the Texas Rangers (2-8) Wednesday for the second game of this 3-game set. First pitch from T-Mobile Park will be 9:40 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Rangers vs. Mariners odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Season series: Mariners lead 1-0

The Mariners beat the Rangers 6-2 Tuesday behind a strong effort from Robbie Ray, who pitched 6 innings, allowing just 2 runs on 4 hits with 4 strikeouts. The bullpen gave up only 2 hits in 3 shutout innings to close the door on a struggling Rangers squad. Seattle 3B Eugenio Suarez hit his third home run of the season to give the Mariners a 3-0 lead in the first.

The Rangers have lost 4 in a row, the first 3 to the Los Angeles Angels. Only 1 of their 8 losses has been by fewer than 2 runs, and each of their last 4 games has been by at least 3 runs. Their team ERA is 6.24, which ranks last in MLB, as does their .287 batting average against.

Rangers at Mariners: Projected starters

RHP Dane Dunning vs. RHP Logan Gilbert

Dunning (0-0, 5.19 ERA) makes his third start. He has a 1.73 WHIP, 4.2 BB/9 and 11.4 K/9 in 8 2/3 IP.

  • Rangers 1-1 in his 2 starts, though he hasn’t pitched more than 5 innings in a start and has allowed a HR in each start.
  • Allowed 2 runs, struck out 10 in 5 innings and got the win in his lone career start against the Mariners.

Gilbert (1-0, 0.90 ERA) makes his third start. He has a 0.80 WHIP, 0.9 BB/9 and 9.9 K/9 in 10 IP.

  • Made 3 starts against the Rangers last season, going 1-0 with a 4.15 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 17 1/3 innings.
  • Has pitched 5 innings in each start this season, allowing 7 total hits and 1 ER (a solo HR against the Minnesota Twins). The Mariners won both of those starts.

Rangers at Mariners picks and predictions

Prediction

Mariners 6, Rangers 3

Money line

The Rangers have been one of the worst teams in baseball so far, dragged down by their pitching staff. Dunning can strike out a bunch of batters, but this Mariners lineup doesn’t go down on strikes very often (8th-fewest in MLB).

Even with the money line at -160, I like the MARINERS to win outright at home.

Run line/Against the spread

In each of the Rangers’ last 4 games, they’ve lost by at least 3 runs. Only one of their losses has been by 1 run this season, and both of their wins came with offensive outbursts (12 runs and 10 runs) to mask their poor pitching.

Against a starter and bullpen like Seattle’s, I don’t see the Rangers putting up many runs. Take the MARINERS -1.5 (+135) at plus money.

Over/Under

The Mariners offense has been hot in the last week, scoring at least 5 runs in 4 of their last 5 games, including 13 in their last 2 games. They put up 6 runs Tuesday against the Rangers and I can see them scoring a bunch of runs once again at home Wednesday.

I like the OVER 7.5 (-115) in this one.
