Texas Longhorns Basketball: Three options to replace Shaka Smart

Friday’s shocking news of Shaka Smart moving to Marquette means Texas has a head coaching vacancy. Here are three possible replacements.

Dana Altman

Jon Rothstein, who broke the Shaka Smart to Marquette news, would say “His name is Dana Altman and he aligns Rubik’s Cubes.”

The Oregon coach is still in the NCAA Tournament, advancing past VCU due to COVID-19 issues and beating Iowa in the round of 32. In recent years, Altman has done nothing but win in Eugene. Four of the last six regular season Pac-12 championships belong to Oregon, along with two Sweet Sixteens, an Elite Eight, and a Final Four. Had the NCAA Tournament not been canceled last season, another deep run would have been in store as well.

Altman has coached in the Big 12 before with Kansas State from 1990-1994. Now 15 years later, he should be one of the favorites to take over in Austin. Until Oregon is out of the tournament, there would be no movement on this possible deal.
