One of the biggest questions surrounded who would replace the production of Devin Duvernay and Collin Johnson. Two players who weren’t in the fold last year showed up on opening night. Tarik Black transferred from Michigan and took over the starting role created by Johnson’s exit. Black finished the night with five receptions for 80 yards and a touchdown. His lone blunder came on a fumble when multiple Miners attempted to bring him down. Brayden Liebrock came through snatching the ball away from UTEP.

The surprise came from the newest Longhorn, Brendan Schooler. He was on campus less than a week and made a big impact in a reserve role. On his first reception, Schooler went 25 yards. On his second, he made one man miss and was off to the races for a 40-yard touchdown. The performance demonstrates Schooler is more than just special teams ace; he can make an impact on the passing game when his number is called.
