Texas Football Recruiting: Three reasons the 2021 class was a disaster

Texas’ 2021 recruiting class was not one Longhorn fans are used to seeing. Here are three reasons it turned out to be such a disaster.

Dominance in the state of Texas by Oklahoma and Texas A&M

Oklahoma and Texas A&M are not just your biggest rivals on the football field, they’re your biggest rivals in the recruiting world. If you head to the 247Sports list of top recruits in the state of Texas and look at the top 15, you’re going to find a lot of Oklahoma and Texas A&M logos beside the players.

There will only be one Longhorn logo next to Ja’Tavion Sanders.

Clayton Smith, Billy Bowman (who was flipped from Texas), and Savion Byrd all signed with the Sooners during the early signing period. For the Aggies, they secured five of the top 15 players, including L.J. Johnson and Shemar Turner. All those prospects were major targets for the Longhorns and they ended up with direct rivals.

You could add Alabama to the list, as they signed three players in the top 10 and Jalen Milroe (No. 13). However, you can expect the Crimson Tide to steal a couple with how dominant of a program they have. Watching Oklahoma and Texas A&M win head to head battles in the state of Texas killed the ’21 class.
