Texas A&M’s road to the CFP playoffs has become more clear

Sitting at No. 14 in the newest College Football Playoffs, Texas A&M is in great position despite Saturday’s loss to South Carolina

Tuesday night’s College Football Playoff Rankings reveal was interesting, to say the least, as the Oregon Ducks came in at No. 1.

At the same time, the Texas Longhorns received a fair placement at No. 6. However, the surprise of the night, in my opinion at least, was No. 7 Penn State, who looked lifeless on offense after falling to No. 5 Ohio State last Saturday.

Texas A&M’s 44-20 loss to South Carolina in Week 10 certainly damaged the Aggies’ playoff hopes before Tuesday’s reveal.

Still, after receiving a No. 14 ranking and being listed as the second team out below No. 13 SMU, head coach Mike Elko and his team are in a great position to earn one of the 12 spots if victories against New Mexico State, Auburn, and Texas come to fruition.

Holding the tie-breaking win over No. 15 LSU, the Tiger’s home matchup vs. No. 11 Alabama will determine which of the two teams earns a playoff spot if they win out Saturday’s game, while No. 16 Ole Miss will host No. 3 Georgia in another make-or-break matchup for the Rebels.

If Georgia loses to Ole Miss, Texas A&M, sitting at 5-1 in the SEC amid the bye week, will regain the No. 1 spot in the conference standings. At the end of the day, two more SEC wins over Auburn on the road and, of course, the Texas Longhorns will likely be more than enough to earn a playoff spot.

Texas A&M will also reach the SEC Title Game if they win out, as Texas would have two SEC losses. At the same time, a matchup with Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, or even Ole Miss is possible.
