Texas among the top schools for former Iowa State guard Tyrese Hunter

The Longhorns are in the mix for the top ranked guard in the transfer portal.

Chris Beard and his staff are looking to replenish a Texas roster that is certainly losing some talent this offseason.

After their second round exit of the NCAA tournament, the Longhorns are expected to lose key contributors from last season such as Courtney Ramey, who declared for the NBA draft and entered the transfer portal. Andrew Jones is still undecided, and Devin Askew announced his intentions to transfer as well.

Even with the return of Marcus Carr, Texas is looking to add more talent to the roster. The Longhorns received good news via Twitter on Monday as the No. 2 transfer and former Iowa State guard Hunter Tyrese announced his top six transfer destinations.

There is only one player in the portal ranked higher than Hunter, and that is former No. 1 overall recruit Emoni Bates who is transferring from Memphis.

Hunter is a former four-star recruit that had an impressive season at Iowa State where he averaged 11 points, five assists, and nearly four rebounds per game. He certainly fits the Beard style of basketball mold with his impressive defensive instincts that saw him get 71 steals, but his shooting is certainly something that needs to improve, as he shot 27.4% from three and 68% from the free throw line.

In order to get Hunter’s services, the Longhorns will have to out recruit schools such as Tennessee, Big 12 foe and defending champion Kansas, and Purdue who sent Texas packing in March.
