Texas A&M (12-2) has won seven consecutive games and is by far one of the hottest teams in the country among a stacked SEC this season after defeating rival Texas 80-60 on Saturday night.
Behind a second-half offensive surge, coach Buzz Williams relied on offseason transfers Zhuric Phelps (18 points) and Pharrel Payne (15 points), who combined for 33 points and 12 rebounds in their best outings all season.
While senior guard Wade Taylor IV netted 13 points, the Aggie star can rely on his teammates to take over the scoring duties when needed. Overall, Texas A&M’s elite defense has kept the Aggies in every game this season and will continue to prevent the highest-scoring SEC teams from taking over games in conference play.
After defeating the Longhorns, Texas A&M rose an impressive seven spots in the latest NET rankings. The team holds a 6-2 Quad 1 and Quad 2 combined record, which only eight other college basketball teams have accomplished.
While the Aggies’ conference schedule is demanding, getting off to a fast start is essential to allowing any midseason missteps not to jeopardize the program’s NCAA Tournament standings.
