Texas A&M Player Profiles: Defensive Lineman, Shemar Turner

Going into the 2022 football season, Aggies Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Texas A&M roster.

Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Jimbo Fisher this season.

Shemar Turner is entering his sophomore season, looking to earn a starting position on the defensive line after spending his freshman season as a rotational backup. Out of the 2021 recruiting class for Aggies, Turner was the highest-rated player in the class, creating instant expectations for the young man as soon as he committed on Dec. 12, 2020. From 2018 to 2020, Turner shined on the field at DeSoto High School in DeSoto, Texas, and was named District 7-6A Co-Defensive Sophomore of the Year during his 2018 sophomore season, and was first-team all-district during his junior season.  Turner began his Texas A&M career during the 2021 season appearing in 8  games, notching 14 total tackles, 1.5 sacks, and 2 tackles for loss on the year playing behind recent Pittsburgh Steelers 3rd round pick, DeMarvin Leal. After adding weight during the offseason, Shemar Turner has ample opportunity to keep improving physically going into summer camp.

Depth Chart Overview

Shemar Turner (Sophomore) is projected as the starting 3-tech defensive tackle for Texas A&M in their 4-2-5 defensive scheme, led by the first-year defensive coordinator for the Aggies, D.J. Durkin. As of now, Turner joins nose tackle, McKinnley Jackson (Junior), edge rusher, Fadil Diggs (Redshirt Sophomore), and potential starting defensive ends, Tunmise Adeleye (Red Shirt Freshman) and Elijah Jeudy (Red Shirt Freshman). Shemar Turner’s high school film shows, a heat-seeking missile blasting off the line of scrimmage at a consistent pace, playing at the defensive end position on several occasions as well, winning his one on ones with great hand use and speed to power ability. At 6-4. 285lb, Turner is very athletic and is a natural disruptor during passing downs, while displaying a twitchy ability to chase down runners. During his first season with the Aggies, Turner showed that his traits had translated to the college level, showing the closing speed, tackling ability, and block shedding on the limited snaps he was given, showing why the future is so bright for the young defender. in early May, while speaking at the Houston Touchdown Club, Jimbo Fisher discussed Shemar Turner’s development stating “He’s becoming a very big, powerful young man. He’s 295 pounds, pushing 300 pounds, and he’ll probably be 305 pounds before the year’s out and still running just as fast or faster and getting stronger.” With all signs pointing to Turner making the jump to the starting lineup, I can confidentially say that we’re all eager to see Shemar Turner put the pads on once again.
