Texas A&M’s defense could look completely different next season due to the departures from the transfer portal and the players who have declared for the NFL draft, including defensive linemen Nic Scourton, Shemar Stewart, and Shemar Turner.
Coach Mike Elko and his team worked on addressing the issue this offseason by bringing in three new defensive linemen from the transfer portal, including Samuel M’Pemba, a former Georgia edge rusher who decided to redshirt in his final season at Athens, GA.
According to On3’s Pete Nakos, M’Pemba has officially signed with Texas A&M and will be ready for the spring football season.
A former top-100-ranked recruit in the 2023 class, M’Pemba’s future with Georgia became murky after recording just six tackles in 11 appearances during his 2023 freshman season, while his redshirt decision was the wisest direction before entering a new program.
With his size, speed, and obvious potential, M’Pemba might seem like a project to some. However, paired with former Pitt/Colorado edge Dayon Hayes and former Florida defensive end T.J. Searcy, Elko and his defensive staff have to feel better. However, they still need to add more depth to the defensive interior.
