Texas A&M and head coach Buzz Williams have continued their search within the college basketball transfer portal since the start of the offseason, knowing that replacing guard Dexter Dennis and adding perimeter shooters to an otherwise stacked roster for the 2023 season are the final pieces to a mostly complete puzzle.
This weekend, CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein reported that former UMass guard RJ Luis, who will be entering his sophomore season, has received interest from Texas A&M among ten other programs, including Penn State, Iowa State, Maryland, Seton Hall, Colorado, Mississippi State, Depaul, St Johns, and Texas Tech.
UMass transfer RJ Luis tells me that he's receiving interest from the following programs:
Texas A&M
Georgia
Texas Tech
St Johns
Depaul
Mississippi State
Colorado
Iowa State
Penn State
Seton Hall
Maryland— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) April 8, 2023
Standing at 6-7 and 196 pounds, the Miami, Florida native and former 3-star recruit in the 2022 recruiting class averaged 11.5 points per game, 4.6 rebounds, while shooting 45.5% from the field, 34.8% from three, and 78.9% from the charity stripe. Luis is yet another long-armed defensive-minded guard that Williams’ feels is perfect in his scheme, while his rebounding ability pairs well with returning forwards Henry Coleman and Julius Marble.
Although Luis only attempted 46 three-point shots last season, his 34% from deep in his first collegiate season can only increase with more experience. For the Aggies, RJ Luis is a solid option to come in next season and provide an instant impact on both ends.
