Texas A&M only has a handful of football coaches that Aggie fans remember as fondly as the legendary R.C. Slocum. The school’s all-time winningest coach announced his retirement on Jan 2, 53 years to the day.
Slocum started at A&M in 1972 when he joined the staff under Emory Bellard as the wide receiver coach. He worked his way up the coaching ladder through three head coaches before eventually taking over for Jackie Sherrill in 1988. He quickly turned and took a foothold in the Southwest Conference, winning three straight conference titles and three Coach of the Year awards.
He even saw success when A&M moved to the Big 12, winning the conference title 1998. After his coaching days were over in 2002, he served in various positions at Texas A&M and the surrounding communities, even serving as interim AD twice between 2019-2024. Slocum concluded his coaching career with a 123-47-2 record and was the longest-tenured coach in Aggie history.
