The Aggies are coming off of their second-weekend scrimmage during fall camp and are now less than two weeks away from their season opener against Sam Houston State on Sept. 3rd, after what feels like the longest offseason in quite some time. With preseason rankings and their many forms still being released, Texas A&M found itself ranked 7th in the USA Today AFCA Coaches Poll and 6th in the AP Top 25, and as the brand new ESPN college football 2022 SP+ 2022 preseason projects were released on Sunday, the Aggies are officially ranked 8th out of 131 FBS teams.
To give some background on the SP+ rankings, here is a brief description of the rankings model:
As always: SP+ is a tempo- and opponent-adjusted measure of college footbal efficiency. It is a predictive measure of the most sustainable and predictable aspects of football, not a résumé ranking, and, along those same lines, these projections aren’t intended to be a guess at what the AP Top 25 will look like at
the end of the year. These are simply early offseason power rankings based on the information we have been able to gather to date.
Here is where Texas A&M lands in the SP+ rankings heading into the 2022 season:
- Texas A&M: Ranked 8th
- SP+: 19.5
- OFF.SP+: 32.2(41)
- DEF.SP+: 12.7(3)
- Projected Wins: 8.0
- Conference Wins: 4.5
