Texas A&M fall football camp: Wednesday’s practice provided a glimpse into what’s to come this season

Texas A&M’s first fall football practice on Wednesday provided a small glimpse into the teams tremendous talent pool and potential ahead of the 2023 season.

What if I told you that one of the biggest stories to come out of the start of Texas A&M’s fall football camp was the weight loss/gains throughout the roster, including star defensive tackle Walter Nolen dropping 30 pounds ahead of his pivotal sophomore campaign? Yes, it’s essential.

On Wednesday, Head Coach Jimbo Fisher and senior offensive lineman Layden Robinson spoke to the media ahead of A&M’s first practice of the season, as the quarterback competition between Conner Weigman and Max Johnson will likely take center stage of the current linebacker and offensive line depth. Of course, no Texas A&M press conference can be complete without questions regarding offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino’s eminent personality.

Even though a small sample size, those in Texas A&M media who attended Wednesday’s practice provided extensive context regarding the potential change in offensive tempo under Bobby Petrino’s guidance, at the same time, Weigman was the first quarterback to practice with the first-team offense, as Max Johnson, who worked with the second-team on the day, is likely to take first-team reps in either of the following two practices.

Texas A&M’s very large offensive line is a group that has already received a dose of preseason hype, though the question remains, is it deserved? Fisher certainly thinks so after expressing confidence in the experienced group earlier in the day. Due to junior right tackle Reuben Fatheree’s minor injury, the first-team starting lineup consisted of Chase Bisontis at right tackle, Layden Robinson at right guard, Bryce Foster at center, Mark Nabou and Kam Dewberry at left guard, and Trey Zuhn at left tackle.

Outside of basic postion drills on both sides of the ball, we’ll likely see more from the defense, especially the deep and talented defensive line group, later this week, so all in all, great throws were made, the players were excited to get back to the grind, and most importantly, the team is as healthy as they’ve been entering fall camp in quite some time.
