Texas A&M 2023 college football season countdown: No. 14 Max Johnson

Max Johnson’s arm strength-based skill set and experience in the SEC are just a few reasons why he remains in tightly-contested battle for the Texas A&M’s starting QB job.

Fear not, Aggie fans, meaningful college football is just around the corner, with the start of the 2023 season under a few weeks away! Here at Aggies Wire, we’ll be counting down by looking at each Texas A&M football player that corresponds to the number of days left till the start of the football season.

With 14 days until kickoff, we’re looking at No. 14 for the Maroon and White: senior quarterback Max Johnson.

Johnson appeared in four games for the Maroon and White in 2022, throwing for 517 yards and three touchdowns without an interception for a passer rating of 135.7. The then-junior suffered a broken bone in his throwing hand in last season’s loss to Mississippi State, which eventually ruled him out for the remainder of the season.

Fast-forward to the present day, and Johnson continues to be in a neck-and-neck position battle with sophomore Conner Weigman for the starting quarterback job in 2023. In what has been a true “iron sharpens iron” scenario, both signal-callers bring their respective strengths and skills to the table which will likely make this a tough decision for Head Coach Jimbo Fisher and Offensive Coordinator Bobby Petrino.

Johnson has the advantage when it comes to his arm strength-based skill set, as well as his experience in the SEC. The senior southpaw spent two seasons with LSU before ushering his next chapter with the Aggies, having thrown for 3,884 yards and 35 touchdowns with seven interceptions with the Tigers.

As Fisher and Texas A&M enter a critical 2023 season where this program must win, and must win now, it’s hard to overlook Johnson’s bevy of experience and reps in facing SEC-level competition. For all we know, Petrino may feel that a more seasoned signal-caller is best suited for his offensive scheme in the short term, whereas Weigman has by all means shown enough on tape to be the quarterback of the future.

No matter how the quarterback depth chart shakes out, having an established player such as Johnson in two will only benefit the quarterback room as a whole, whether as someone that can push the likes of Weigman or as an option to helm the offense when needed.
