Texas A&M Hall of Famer Jackie Sherrill has made the final cut in the 2024 Texas Sports Hall of Fame ballot. Along with around 20 other people, the former athletic director and football coach will have an opportunity to be voted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame on April 13, 2024, in Waco, Texas.
Jackie Sherrill holds the heart of many Aggie fans for multiple reasons. In 1982 he became the athletic director and football coach, where he would have one of the most memorable runs at the University. After a slow start, Coach Sherrill was able to finish as the SWC champion three years in a row finishing in the top 12 each other those years, with No. 6 being the highest. During that stretch, he also won two of the three Cotton Bowls with an overall record of 29-7.
However, there are two very school-specific reasons Coach Sherrill’s name stays on every Aggies’ mind. The first is he started the tradition of the 12th-man kickoff team, which has gone through a few iterations but remains a storied tradition. The second is he was one of few Aggie football coaches to beat the Texas Longhorns consistently and, at one point, had a five-game winning streak against them.
Congratulations to Jackie Sherrill, and we all wish him luck on the Hall of Fame voting.
