Texans training camp: Wide receivers step up in final days of practice against Rams

On a day when players needed to impress, the Houston Texans wide receivers stepped up at the right moment.

Stefon Diggs, Nico Collins and Tank Dell are all locks to make the active roster for the Houston Texans this upcoming season.

John Metchie III, Robert Woods, Noah Brown. Xavier Hutchinson and Steven Sims aren’t, so every rep counts heading into the final days of training camp.

They seemed to impress during Thursday’s joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams at the Methodist Training Center just outside NRG Stadium.

Even with the constant pressure hitting the offensive line without Pro Bowl tackle Laremy Tunsil, the Texans made plays through the air. Diggs was a consistent target for Stroud and caught a pair of touchdowns, including a 50-yard blast on the first play of live reps.

Metchie, who led Houston in receiving yards during last week’s win over the Giants, caught three passes for first-down pickups when working with the second-team offense. Ben Skowronek, another player looking to make the final 53-man squad, made plays against his former team.

Hutchinson caught a touchdown pass from Mills during red zone drills. So did Robert Woods, who last year was a consistent No. 3 target behind Dell and Collins. Even Sims showed off the speed on special teams.

“We got a lot of work in just we set out to accomplish. Working a lot of situational football and we were able to do that,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said. “I thought it was a clean practice on both sides. A lot of competitive juices flowing on both sides, as well.”

Receivers like Collins, Diggs and Dell likely won’t play in Saturday’s noon kick, so it serves as one last time for a breakout performance to make the active roster.

There are three spots and only six receivers, so who lands the final place entering Week 1?
