Texans sign former Chargers DB Jaylen Watkins

The Houston Texans have signed former LA Chargers defensive back Jaylen Watkins on a two-year deal.

The Houston Texans have made their fourth defensive back addition of the free agency window by signing former LA Chargers defensive back Jaylen Watkins according to James Palmer.

The 28-year-old former fourth-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles joins Bill O’Brien’s side on a two-year $3 million deal after making 14 appearances in 2019. Watkins notched up 23 solo tackles while allowing 24 receptions on 26 targets last season per Pro Football Focus.

A versatile player with experience at both cornerback and safety, he fits O’Brien’s demands to a tee. The Texans coach demands versatility from his players and Watkins will give the side depth in the secondary, something which has at times eluded them the last few years.

Expect to see a lot of Watkins in Brad Seely’s special teams unit and potentially as a backup cornerback behind second-year CB Lonnie Johnson. He will be battling for the spot along with fellow recent signings Phillip Gaines and Vernon Hargraves.
