Texans reportedly sign QB Tim Boyle to practice squad

Signing Tim Boyle does not bode well for Houston Texans rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud’s availability for Week 16.

The Houston Texans added a quarterback Tim Boyle to their practice squad Tuesday, according to multiple reports.

The move came a day after Boyle worked out for the team. He previous played for the New York Jets, Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers. The Texans also unsuccessfully put in a claim for Nathan Rourke, who was picked up by the New England Patriots.

Boyle began the year as the New York Jets’ third string quarterback but jumped to No. 2 on the depth chart after Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles in Week 1. He eventually took over for Zach Wilson in Week 11 before he started the next two games the New York.

He wasn’t he wasn’t very effective, though. Boyle completed 48-of-77 passes for 360 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions. Boyle lost both of his starts and was subsequently waived, coincidentally, before the Jets played the Texans in Week 14.

Boyle’s completed 62.3 percent of his career passing attempts for 934 passing yards, four touchdown and 12 interceptions in 20 appearances.

While this move likely won’t make waves, it perhaps indicates C.J. Stroud isn’t close to returning from his concussion. Stroud is reportedly still in the NFL’s concussion protocol, per KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson, and is still dealing with concussions symptoms.

If Stroud can’t go again, the Texans would likely turn to Case Keenum once more with Davis Mills as the backup. Boyle would have to be promoted to the 53-man roster on gameday to be considered the team’s emergency quarterback, though.

Keenum played well in the Texans’ Week 15 overtime win over the Tennessee Titans. He completed 23-of-36 passes for 229 yards and threw the game-tying touchdown to wideout Noah Brown with three minutes left to send the game to overtime.
