The Houston Texans have their new head coach. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Texans have hired David Culley away from the Baltimore Ravens, giving him a five-year contract.
Culley has an extensive and impressive resume. Beyond his work as an assistant head coach and wide receivers coach with Baltimore, Culley has also been the assistant head coach under Andy Reid with the Kansas City Chiefs. However, it would seem the Texans didn’t hire Culley for his work with the Ravens’ offense as they finished last in both passing attempts and passing yards in 2020, and were 17th in passing DVOA, according to Football Outsiders.
Houston had to find replacements at both head coach and general manager after firing Bill O’Brien following an 0-4 start this season. That has not been an easy process for the Texans, who upset quarterback Deshaun Watson by not consulting him on the hires.
With their star player now wanting to be traded, Culley might be walking into a disaster situation. However, with Baltimore being the coaching staff at last year’s Pro Bowl, Culley coached Watson for that game. According to the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson, the pair formed a really good connection during that week of practice. The Texans could be hoping by hiring Culley, they’ll be able to repair the situation with Watson.
The Ravens don’t play the Texans next season but if Culley is able to quickly return Houston to their former glory, a playoff meeting could be in order.
