Houston Texans coach David Culley tacitly confirmed Saturday after the fourth training camp practice why running back Mark Ingram may have been brought to the AFC South club.
Culley explained after practice to the media that Ingram “brings it every day” along with his aspects of being a proven leader.
“He’s the same guy every day,” Culley said. “Sometimes I like to, because I’ve been with him for two years at another place, and I sometimes like to feel like when he’s in practice, he’s an extension of me because he brings it every day.”
Ingram, who tallied 274 carries for 1,317 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns with the Ravens over the past two seasons, has similar feelings.
“And I feel like an extension of him,” said Ingram. “We had a great two years together in Baltimore. He was always someone who encouraged me through my good seasons, even last year, that was a challenging year, he was always super encouraging to me, always consistent, always relatable, always down-to-earth, always doing the best he could to put his players in position to have success, and developing his players to continue to improve.”
Ingram is in a crowded running back stable that includes two other Pro Bowlers such as David Johnson and Phillip Lindsay. Houston also acquired Rex Burkhead, who used to be with general manager Nick Caserio with the New England Patriots, and has Dontrell Hilliard, Scottie Phillips, and Buddy Howell on the roster.
Of the seven running backs on the roster, there is only one who understands the new coach.
Said Culley: “He knows what I’m all about. He knows what we want to get done here. You know, he brings that every day, and I appreciate that from him.”
