Texans coach David Culley believes QB Tyrod Taylor sustained injury on touchdown run

Houston Texans coach David Culley says that he thinks QB Tyrod Taylor sustained his hamstring injury on the 15-yard touchdown run.

HOUSTON — Houston Texans’ quarterback Tyrod Taylor sustained a hamstring injury during Sunday’s 31-21 defeat to the Cleveland Browns. Taylor suffered the injury late in the second quarter and did not return to the field for the second half — leaving rookie Davis Mills to finish the game under center for the Texans.

It’s uncertain when Taylor’s injury initially took place at FirstEnergy Stadium. But first-year coach David Culley believes Taylor’s injury occurred amid his 15-yard touchdown run.

“I think there was a little tweak on the touchdown,” Culley said during Monday’s media availability. “It wasn’t to the point where he felt like he could not go — but yes. The way he is, he never said anything to anybody.”

According to Culley, Taylor said he was fine to continue playing during his halftime evaluation but knew his injury was more severe. Culley said he had to remind Taylor that the decision to rule him out for the rest of the game was for the long-haul, not for the short-haul.

Culley announced that Taylor is listed as day-to-day and will have more information on his hamstring injury following the results of the MRI. He also said if Taylor is ready to go, he expects his quarterback to play.

Taylor was one of 10 players who went down with an injury against the Browns. Prior to his injured hamstring, Taylor’s day began on a great note against his former team, connecting on 10 out of 11 pass attempts for 125 yards and one touchdown. Early in the second quarter, he used his mobility to put the Texans ahead 14-7 with a 15-yard touchdown run.

“Tyrod is a competitor,” said running back Phillip Lindsay who caught Taylor’s lone touchdown pass on Sunday. “He wants to be out there. He wants to do what he can to help this team win.

“For him to put his body on the line when he is not 100%, that just shows the kind of grit he has. You guys will be seeing him sooner than you think because of that mentality that he brings.”
