The Houston Texans won’t find a No. 1 receiver in 2020, but they can still surround quarterback Deshaun Watson with reliable wideouts who could get it done by committee.
Enter Breshad Perriman. The free agent receiver spent 2019 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and caught 36 passes for 645 yards and six touchdowns in 14 games. If Perriman doesn’t return to the Buccaneers, he will be on his fourth team since the Baltimore Ravens drafted him in Round 1 of the 2015 NFL Draft.
Mark Schofield from the Touchdown Wire believes that Perriman is one of 15 free agents currently on the market that could greatly benefit a team’s receiving corps.
Another wide receiver waiting to finalize his 2020 playing plans is Breshad Perriman. Coming off a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 2019 was arguably his best season as a professional. He caught 36 passes (a career high) for 645 yards (a career high) and six touchdowns (also a career high). Down the stretch of the season he became a favorite target of Jameis Winston’s. He started the final three games of the season for the Bucs, and eclipsed 100 yards receiving in each contest, including a three-touchdown effort against the Detroit Lions in Week 15.
The Texans faced Perriman in Week 16, defeating Perriman’s side 23-20 to win the AFC South. The 6-2, 215-pound receiver caught seven passes for 102 yards.
Texans assistant head coach Romeo Crennel, who was the defensive coordinator for Houston last season, knew that Perriman was going to see his fair share of targets from quarterback Jameis Winston with Mike Evans and Chris Godwin out of the lineup.
“Perriman, he shows up on the tape,” Crennel told reporters on Dec. 18, 2019. “As your looking at the tape, he’s got good size, got good downfield speed and they throw him the ball as well. So, they had a good stable of receivers and I think probably his role will become more prominent without those guys around and so he’ll be the go-to guy and then we’re going to have to try to get something done about him.”
With Watson throwing Perriman the ball, he could have similar results.
The Texans signed former Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers receiver Randall Cobb in free agency after trading three-time All-Pro DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals.
