Terrell Lewis’ status uncertain due to knee swelling, which required draining

Lewis has battled knee issues dating back to college.

Injuries were the story of Terrell Lewis’ college career at Alabama, missing significant time with elbow and knee issues. He’s just over halfway through his first NFL season and his durability has once again come into question.

After starting the year on the reserve/non-football injury list due to a knee procedure after the Rams suspected there might’ve been an infection from a previous surgery, that same knee has caused a problem yet again.

Lewis missed practice Thursday with a knee injury, which Sean McVay attributed to swelling in his media session.

“Terrell Lewis did not participate because of his knee. He had some swelling, we drained it and we’re going to continue to monitor that,” McVay said.

McVay is unsure what Lewis’ status will be moving forward, clarifying that it’s the same knee that he previously tore his ACL in and this current issue is related to his past injury.

“Yeah, it’s still his knee. He’s had some different issues with it,” McVay said. “It’s all related in some form or fashion, but he had some swelling we had to drain it. We’re kind of waiting to get some further information on his status and what that looks like moving forward.”

It doesn’t sound like a very good situation for the rookie pass rusher, who simply has not been able to stay healthy in the past four years or so. The Rams took a chance on him in the third round because of his potential and ceiling, but they have to be hoping this doesn’t become a recurring problem with Lewis’ knee.

In six games this season, Lewis has three tackles, two sacks, four QB hits and two tackles for loss. The Rams did just claim Derek Rivers off waivers, so if Lewis does miss time, they have depth behind him.
